Events of the Month Everyone knows of the notorious Black History Month that takes place but no one really ever acknowledges the events that take place. Well for those who don’t know of these such events I can go all day about the events that happen throughout this month, but there are certain events that I think you might find quite interesting and fun. One of my favorite events that I attended was the Martin Luther King Parade. This parade featured various high school marching bands such as Dillard, Deerfield, and Stranahan. There were not only high school marching bands, but there were also step teams, floats in tribute to Martin Luther King, and urban bands playing on buckets in the back of trucks. This parade is a celebration of the legend himself Martin Luther King, but not only the celebration of his birthday but of his noble pride in being an African-American and fighting for equality. It also highlights the privileges that are being stripped away from African-Americans just because of the color of their skin. Other Black History events that take place are the many Black History Exhibits that include; portraitures, conceptual installation art, photography, paintings, videos, and sculptures at the Old Dillard Museum. The piece in the picture you see above is one of the art works created but a bunch of local students in the area worked so it can be presented on ties of respect. The portraits and such are a way of expression with the combination of the use of an incredible talent and the love for the African-American race. What also is a way to Celebrate Black History is through music, which is what they do at the Urban Music Festival. This event is filled with fun entertainment and much community participation, the festival is focused on breaking new boundaries each year. It will continue to do so as it aims to reach the hearts and minds of Urban music lovers and the reasoning of Urban music was so that colored people can forget the bad times and rejoice in the new era as we obtain freedom and equality in America. Non spot events occur not only in Broward County but also Miami Dade, the Miami-Dade County Black Affairs Advisory Board's Heritage Planning Committee along with various community based organizations have scheduled a number of events that pay homage to this year's national theme: "The Crisis in Black Education.”
